It is a perfect symbiosis of a traditional jazzballade with energetic-electronic Nu-Jazz beat. the centre is build by the voice of singer Bella Wagner, mellow, sometimes breathy, subtle emotional and the piano part in its comping, and soloing role. minimalistic electronic sounds open warm full-bodied music.

Mother Sub Modal Noir remix

sub (syncopathic.records/subtle audio), an austrian music producer and labelowner of syncopathicrecordings, who has released on several drumandbass labesl all over the world, demonstrates his skills on creating deep an dark atmospheres in this remix.

Mother rebooted Electronic Candy remix

The music of Electronic Candy is a mix of minimalism and electronic music. Their groovy beats and sounds are mostly produced analog. The austrian jazz musicians Marco Palewicz and Julian Weidenthaler experimented with drumandbass and other electronic genres before the found their passion in minimal music. “mother – reboot in a new dimension based on 8-bit style”.

I‘m very happy to recommend the soon to be released next Mother EP from stefan oberthaler aka KEYMINATOR. Three mixes of a track which those fammiliar with the previous releases will not be suprised is both high in quality and challenging the conventions of both song and sound.

All three mixes feature the moody vocals of Bella Wagner, not so much singing at the outset- more sliding into a breathy monolouge. Emotional yet controlled. The original mix has lounge-style piano backing and the thinnest jazz drumming gently brushed to give the composition a pulse. A few other synth fills appear and fade- but its the piano that leaves the biggest impression as it develops through the song. Fine playing.

Like the original, the Sub Modal Noir mix demands more than a couple of minutes of the listeners attention before the nature of the composition is apparent. Spiky electro drums pin this one down like a distant ticking clock- with a sub bass that will move untethered furniture. Another listening track. Its not difficult to image both this mix and the original mix working as effective TV or film soundtrack.

The Rebooted Electronic Candy mix delivers the most conventional version, with electro drums and a standard four-to-the floor bass drum framing Bella’s vocals (more echoed than previously- and periodically forced into an electro-stutter). This a dancable re-configuration rather than a complete sell-out remix. Its probably not going to result in the summer smash on the white Isle (because naturally its better than that dross), but it should get the track onto radio or sound systems of enlightened clubs or bars.

At a time when the planet is awash with sounds created unimaginativey to over-worked formulas, its encouraging that Stefan and his collaborators are willing to take a few risks and present a challenging alternative. I cant wait for follow-up release I expect to be on their way.
