Q: short bio?
Born in Istanbul, grew up in Los Angeles & Ohio. Lived in Turkey for 7 years, which is where I began to DJ back in 1993 @ Power FM in Istanbul. Not the first DJ in my family however, my father was on Turkish state radio back in the 1960′s & 1970′s, took a break for a while to raise his family, and is now back on air in Istanbul doing talk radio since 1993 to this day.
Q: alltime favourites?
…Albums…
Incognito – Positivity
Massive Attack – Blue Lines
Jazzanova – In Between
Galliano – The Plot Thickens
4hero – Play With The Changes
…Singles…
Wood Brass & Steel – Funkanova
Jay Dee – Plastic Dreams
House of Gypsies – Sume Sigh Say
The Bucketheads – The Bomb
Everything But The Girl – Missing
Q: situation in your area (venues, concerts, clubs…)?
For not being in a major metropolitan city like NY, LA, SF, Chicago or Miami; Pittsburgh is very consistent with weekly nights that enable residents to go check out live DJ’s & acts perform on any given night. The clubs are more for the masses where they play awful R&B that you hear on commercial radio everyday, though the lounges & bars host more independent sounds.
Q: equipment studio/live?
In my home studio I have a pretty basic setup, which includes two silver Technics SL-1200MK2 turntables, two Pioneer 800 MK2 CDJ’s & a Pioneer DJM-300 mixer. The radio station itself isn’t quite suited for a DJ to mix, though they do have top of the line equipment, which on air hosts do get to use a more hands on approach, which is much better than having everything automated like @ a commercial station where all you really need to do is turn on the mic. When DJ’ing live I use vinyl & CDJ’s only, no Ableton Live or anything like that.
Q: productions in the past?
I enjoy playing the music so much I never really got in to the production aspect of things. I know my role, which is to feature & expose all the great production that keeps coming year in & year out. I do dabble with production on my laptop & various iPhone app’s, though nothing I would subject anyone to listen through.
Q: new productions (podcasts, cds….)?
The radio show keeps me quite busy, as it is a four hour broadcast each week to produce. Though I am getting ready this fall to start a daily online feature on my SoundCloud page, as well as my blogs, called “15 Minutes” where the focus will be on a select few random selections, something different each day, exposing people to great new sounds in small doses.
